CSJ’s founder and owner Ceri Rundle was honoured to be invited to judge the BBC’s recent One Man & His Dog Championship 2021 at Penrhyn Castle.
Sheepdogs and trials are in Ceri’s blood having been brought up on her family’s sheep farm. She was in fact the first ever lady to appear on the BBC2 series 'One Man & His Dog' and the first to qualify for the Welsh National Team in 1996 so it was fitting that this year she was in the judge’s hotseat.
Ceri said, “I have grown up with One Man & His Dog having watched my dad win the brace competition three times with his dogs, Gel & Bwlch Bracken, who became household names.
I was then lucky enough to be invited to compete in the first Young Handlers competition – again on the Wales Team - so it was it was an honour and huge responsibility to be invited as the sole judge this year.”
The event consisted in the best young talent from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales who are paired up with top senior shepherds from each respective nation.
The youngsters competed with one dog whilst the seniors are tested on sheepdog trialling’s toughest discipline – the brace – in which they must work two dogs at the same time.
In tough competition from the other three teams Charlie Dumbleton with his dog Del and Megan Hutchinson with her dogs Katie and Sophie took the Championship for England.
A last comment from Ceri - “The site and course did North Wales proud but the sheep proved to be very challenging. However, all the handlers and their dogs worked really well.”
